Iphigenia in Aulis (Way translation)
by Euripides
'Iphigenia in Aulis (Way translation)' Summary
'Iphigenia in Aulis' is Euripides' final extant play, set before the Trojan War. Agamemnon, the Greek commander, faces a devastating dilemma. His fleet is stalled at Aulis, unable to sail to Troy, due to the wrath of Artemis. To appease her, the goddess demands the sacrifice of Agamemnon's daughter, Iphigenia. Agamemnon, torn between his duty to his men and his love for his daughter, reluctantly agrees. Iphigenia, unaware of her fate, is lured to Aulis under the pretense of an arranged marriage. When she learns the truth, the play explores her desperate pleas for mercy and the conflicting motivations of those surrounding her. The tragedy highlights the brutal realities of war, the complex interplay of power and morality, and the enduring weight of family ties.Book Details
