Tristan and Isolde
'Tristan and Isolde' Summary
The story begins with Tristan, a knight in the service of King Mark of Cornwall, being sent to Ireland to escort Isolde, an Irish princess, back to Cornwall to be Mark's bride. On the voyage, Tristan and Isolde unwittingly drink a love potion intended for Mark, and they fall deeply and passionately in love. They plan a secret meeting, but their affair is discovered by Mark's advisor, Melot, who informs the King. Mark, heartbroken and betrayed, banishes Tristan and Isolde. Torn apart by their love and fate, Tristan eventually dies of a self-inflicted wound. Hearing of his death, Isolde rushes to him and dies in his arms, united in death as they were in life. Wagner's opera is a masterful blend of music, drama, and mythology, capturing the overwhelming intensity of forbidden love and its ultimate, tragic end.Book Details
