Misérables, Volume 4
by Victor Hugo
'Misérables, Volume 4' Summary
Volume 4 of *Les Misérables* picks up with Jean Valjean, now living under the alias of Monsieur Madeleine, as a successful factory owner and respected member of society. He is haunted by his past as a convict and struggles with his newfound conscience, torn between his desire for a peaceful life and the constant threat of exposure. He becomes a father figure to Cosette, a young girl whose mother, Fantine, had been driven to desperation by poverty. Meanwhile, the city of Paris simmers with discontent, leading to a full-scale rebellion. Valjean, deeply moved by the plight of the oppressed, finds himself drawn into the revolution, both to protect his own identity and to fight for a fairer world. The volume follows his involvement in the uprising, his complicated feelings for Cosette, and his ongoing conflict with Inspector Javert, whose rigid adherence to the law contrasts sharply with Valjean's evolving sense of morality. As the revolution unfolds, Valjean's past catches up with him, forcing him to confront the consequences of his actions and to make a choice that will shape his future.Book Details
