John Inglesant, a Romance
'John Inglesant, a Romance' Summary
John Inglesant, raised within the strictures of the Jesuit faith, finds himself caught between the world of courtly life and the yearnings of his soul. He serves as a cavalier in the court of Charles I, witnessing the turbulence of the English Civil War. Yet, Inglesant's spirit is drawn to the mystical and the contemplative. He seeks refuge in the quieter life of religious contemplation, driven by an inner yearning for spiritual truth. His quest leads him to Italy, where he encounters the intellectual and religious movements of the era, grappling with the philosophies of Molinism and Quietism, and experiencing the conflicting forces of devotion and societal pressure. Throughout his journey, Inglesant struggles to reconcile his devout faith with the demands of his social life, exploring the complexities of loyalty, love, and the search for personal meaning. He ultimately finds himself caught in a conflict between the external expectations of his world and the internal yearnings of his soul. The novel ends with Inglesant seeking a life of solitude and spiritual reflection, having embraced a path of inner peace and unwavering devotion to his faith.Book Details
