R.U.R. (Rossum’s Universal Robots)
by Karel Čapek
'R.U.R. (Rossum’s Universal Robots)' Summary
Set in a world where robots have replaced human labor, R.U.R. follows Helena Glory, the daughter of a prominent industrialist, as she travels to the island factory of Rossum's Universal Robots. Her mission is to champion the rights of these artificial beings, whom she believes deserve recognition as more than mere tools. However, the play's central characters, including the enigmatic factory director Harry Domin and the insightful scientist Dr. Gall, hold differing views on the role of robots in society. As the robots begin to exhibit an unexpected level of sentience and develop complex emotions, the line between creator and creation blurs, and the question of their humanity becomes increasingly complex. The play culminates in a harrowing climax that challenges humanity's relationship with technology and raises profound questions about the consequences of unchecked technological advancement and the nature of existence itself.Book Details
