Hester Prynn, een jonge vrouw die veroordeeld is tot het dragen van een scharlaken letter 'A' op haar kleding als teken van haar adulterie, wordt gedwongen haar leven in het puritaanse Boston te leiden onder de veroordelende blikken van haar medemensen.
