The Village Coquettes
'The Village Coquettes ' Summary
Charles Dickens would seem to be a natural as a playwright, especially considering the many melodramatic events in his stories and his genius in tying seemingly random characters and events into a cohesive whole. Yet, it is important to note that English theater goers of his time weren’t spending their time waiting for the latest Shakespeare revival. There were serious works, but there were many more examples of extravagant fantasy pageants and simple, frolicsome pieces with light musical numbers. Before he started writing novels, Charles Dickens tried his hand at theater. The Village Coquettes is a two act musical. Sadly the music was lost long ago so this will be a spoken version.
