Uther and Igraine
'Uther and Igraine' Summary
Uther and Igraine is a historical romance novel written by Warwick Deeping, first published in 1929. The book is a retelling of the story of King Arthur's parents, Uther Pendragon and Igraine of Cornwall.
The story begins with Uther Pendragon, the High King of Britain, waging a war against the Saxons. During this time, he becomes enamored with Igraine, the wife of his enemy, the Duke of Cornwall. Uther uses Merlin's magic to disguise himself as the Duke and spends the night with Igraine, resulting in the conception of Arthur.
The rest of the story follows the aftermath of this event, including Uther's guilt over his actions and his ultimate death in battle. The book also delves into the struggles of Igraine and her family as they come to terms with the events that have unfolded.
Throughout the novel, Deeping weaves themes of love, loyalty, betrayal, and redemption. The characters are complex and well-developed, and the historical setting is vividly described.
As with many of Deeping's works, Uther and Igraine emphasizes the importance of human relationships and emotions. The novel explores the impact of Uther's and Igraine's actions on those around them, and how love and forgiveness can ultimately overcome even the most difficult of situations.
Uther and Igraine remains a popular retelling of the Arthurian legend and is considered one of Deeping's finest works. Its themes of love, honor, and redemption continue to resonate with readers today.
