Vital Question, or, What is to be Done?

by Nikolai Chernyshevsky

'What Is To Be Done?' is a novel by Nikolai Chernyshevsky, written during his imprisonment in the Peter and Paul Fortress in St. Petersburg. The novel explores themes of social justice, revolutionary ideals, and personal transformation in the context of 19th-century Russia under Tsarist rule. It follows the lives of several characters, including Vera Pavlovna, a strong and independent woman who seeks a life of meaning and purpose, and Rakhmetov, a dedicated revolutionary who embodies the ideals of self-sacrifice and social change. Through their interactions, Chernyshevsky presents his vision of a society based on equality, cooperation, and individual fulfillment, offering a critique of the existing social order and advocating for a radical shift towards a more equitable future.
