De roman volgt de reis van Amy Dorrit, een jonge vrouw die opgroeit in de gevangenis, en haar zoektocht naar liefde, geluk en haar eigen identiteit. Tegelijkertijd belicht Dickens de onrechtvaardigheid van het sociale systeem, de beklemmende kracht van armoede en de verdorvenheid van rijkdom. Met scherpe satire en meeslepende personages, onthult 'Kleine Dorrit' de complexiteit van de menselijke natuur en de universele zoektocht naar vrijheid en waardigheid.
