Edward Waverley, a young English soldier, is sent to Scotland in 1745 to quell the Jacobite Rebellion. However, he soon finds himself torn between his loyalty to the Crown and his growing sympathy for the Jacobite cause. As he travels through the Scottish Highlands, Waverley encounters a cast of colorful characters, including the eccentric Baron Bradwardine and the enigmatic Flora Mac-Ivor.
