Sam McPherson, a young man raised in the small town of Caxton, Ohio, embarks on a journey to achieve the American Dream. Driven by ambition and a desire to escape his dysfunctional family, he leaves Caxton for Chicago and quickly rises through the ranks of the business world. However, his relentless pursuit of success takes its toll on his personal life. He marries Sue Rainey, the daughter of his wealthy boss, but their marriage is strained by his ambition and their inability to have children. As Sam's business empire grows, his father-in-law, Colonel Rainey, is forced out of his own company, leading to a rift between Sam and Sue. A telegram announcing Colonel Rainey's suicide causes Sam to question his own life and the meaning of his achievements. He leaves his business and travels, searching for a sense of purpose. Eventually, he encounters a struggling woman with three children and takes them into his care, seeking to find a family connection he has long yearned for. This unconventional family unit eventually reunites with Sue, offering a glimmer of hope for a new chapter in Sam's life.Book Details
