Winter Comes

Winter Comes

by Edward Powys Mathers

Edward Powys Mathers was a British poet and translator, who specialized in Asiatic poetry. He is best known for his translations of The Garden of Bright Waters, a collection of 120 love poems from Asia, and Bilhana's Black Marigolds, a free interpretation of the Kashmiri poet Bilhana's work. Mathers' translations were not scholarly works, but rather adaptations in the tradition of Edward FitzGerald's Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. They were highly influential in introducing Asian poetry to a wider English-speaking audience.
