Agamemnon (Morshead Translation)
by Aeschylus
'Agamemnon (Morshead Translation)' Summary
Agamemnon, King of Argos, returns home from the Trojan War, unaware of the web of treachery awaiting him. Clytemnestra, his wife, has plotted his murder, seeking revenge for the sacrifice of their daughter Iphigenia, and driven by her illicit affair with Aegisthus, Agamemnon's cousin. As Agamemnon steps onto his palace grounds, he is greeted by Clytemnestra's elaborate welcome, but beneath the surface lies a chilling deceit. The chorus, a group of elders, witnesses the unfolding events with a mix of fear and foreboding, lamenting the decline of the once-glorious house of Atreus. The play culminates in Agamemnon's brutal death at the hands of Clytemnestra and her lover, Aegisthus, setting the stage for the ensuing acts of vengeance and the pursuit of justice that will define the Oresteia trilogy.Book Details
