De tweede aflevering van 'De Ellendigen' focust op Cosette, de dochter van Fantine. Het verhaal begint met Cosette, een jong meisje dat wordt uitgebuit door de Thénardiers, een wrede familie die haar als een dienstmeisje behandelt. Valjean, die Fantine al eerder heeft geholpen, besluit Cosette te redden van haar ellendige bestaan en neemt haar mee naar Parijs.
