Hecyra, or "The Mother-in-Law," is a Roman comedy written by Terence in the 2nd century BC. The play follows the story of Pamphilus, a young man who has accidentally impregnated a woman named Philumena while intoxicated. After marrying Philumena in order to protect her honor, Pamphilus realizes that he does not love her and begins to neglect her. He turns his attention to his mistress, Bacchis, but she becomes jealous of Philumena and ultimately rejects Pamphilus. Meanwhile, Philumena's mother, Sostrata, and her own mother-in-law, Myrrhina, become entangled in a conflict over their daughters' relationships with Pamphilus. The play explores themes such as love, marriage, family, and the role of women in ancient Roman society. Hecyra is a witty and engaging comedy that offers a glimpse into the social and cultural norms of ancient Rome.
