Alcestis (Way Translation)
by Euripides
'Alcestis (Way Translation)' Summary
Admetus, the King of Pherae, is granted a reprieve from death by the god Apollo, but only if someone else willingly takes his place. When no one else steps forward, Alcestis, his devoted wife, sacrifices herself for him. The play opens with Admetus mourning his wife's death, and Heracles, a guest in his home, enters and attempts to retrieve Alcestis from the underworld. Euripides' *Alcestis* grapples with themes of sacrifice, love, and the conflicting desires of gods and mortals. The play's ambiguous ending, where Alcestis is ultimately rescued, leaves the audience pondering the nature of death, the power of love, and the potential for human redemption.Book Details
