'Amends for Ladies' Summary
Amends for Ladies opens with a debate between three women: Lady Honour, Lady Perfect, and Lady Bright. Lady Honour, a maid, argues that maids have the best lot in life, as they are free from the burdens of marriage and childbearing. Lady Perfect, a wife, counters that wives have the best lot, as they have the love and support of a husband. Lady Bright, a widow, argues that widows have the best lot, as they are free to do as they please. The three women agree to test their theories by disguising themselves and living in each other's shoes. Lady Honour disguises herself as a boy and becomes a servant to Ingen, the man she loves. Lady Perfect disguises herself as a widow and tries to seduce Love-all, her husband's friend. Lady Bright disguises herself as a young woman and tries to attract Bold, a young citizen who is pursuing her. The play follows the three women as they navigate their new lives and learn more about themselves and each other. In the end, the three women come to realize that there is no one-size-fits-all answer to the question of which has the better lot. Each woman has her own unique set of circumstances and must decide for herself what is best for her.Book Details
