'Amphitryon; or, Jupiter in Disguise' Summary
Jupiter, the king of the gods, and Mercury, the messenger of the gods, disguise themselves as Amphitryon, a Theban general, and his slave, Sosia, in order to visit Alcmena, Amphitryon's wife. Alcmena is unaware of the gods' disguises, and she believes that Jupiter is her husband. Jupiter and Alcmena spend the night together, and Alcmena becomes pregnant with Hercules. Meanwhile, the real Amphitryon and Sosia return home from the war. They are met with disbelief and accusations of infidelity.
