Amphitryon; or, Jupiter in Disguise

Amphitryon; or, Jupiter in Disguise

by Titus Maccius Plautus

Amphitryon is a Roman comedy by Plautus, first performed in 186 BC. It tells the story of Jupiter, the king of the gods, who disguises himself as Amphitryon, a Theban general, in order to seduce Alcmena, Amphitryon's wife. Mercury, the messenger of the gods, disguises himself as Amphitryon's slave, Sosia. When the real Amphitryon and Sosia return home, they are met with disbelief and accusations of infidelity. The play is full of mistaken identities, slapstick humor, and witty dialogue.
