Princess of Elis
by Moliere
'Princess of Elis' Summary
The Princess of Elis, the daughter of Iphitas, is a young woman of great beauty and charm. She is courted by several princes, including Euryalus, Aristomenes, and Theocles. Each prince tries to win her affections through various strategies: Euryalus relies on his wealth and power, Aristomenes on his bravery and chivalry, and Theocles on his wit and charm. The Princess, however, remains unmoved by their advances. She is determined to choose a husband for herself based on true love, not on social standing or material wealth. The play follows the Princess as she navigates the complex world of courtly romance, balancing her desire for independence and self-determination with the expectations placed upon her by society. The play culminates in a grand ball, where the Princess finally reveals her true feelings and chooses her suitor. The play offers a witty and insightful commentary on the nature of love and courtship, as well as the complexities of social expectations and the power dynamics within a courtly setting.Book Details
