Callista
'Callista' Summary
Callista is a historical novel set in the third century Roman Empire. The story follows Callista, a beautiful Greek woman who is forced to choose between her love for a pagan philosopher, Maximus, and her newfound faith in Christianity.
Callista is initially attracted to Maximus's intellect and his passion for life. However, as she gets to know him better, she begins to see the flaws in his character. Maximus is arrogant and self-centered, and he is not willing to compromise his beliefs for anyone.
Callista's faith in Christianity is also tested. She is subjected to persecution and ridicule, and she is even threatened with death. However, she remains steadfast in her beliefs, and she eventually dies a martyr for her faith.
The novel explores the themes of love, faith, and sacrifice. It is a story about the power of love to transform lives, the importance of faith in the face of adversity, and the willingness to sacrifice oneself for what one believes in.
Callista is a complex and well-developed character. She is intelligent, beautiful, and passionate. She is also flawed, but she is ultimately redeemed by her faith. Maximus is a more challenging character to like. He is arrogant and self-centered, but he is also capable of great love and compassion.
The novel is set against the backdrop of the persecution of Christians in the third century Roman Empire. This persecution is a constant threat to Callista, but it also serves to strengthen her faith. She eventually dies a martyr for her faith, but she does so willingly and with great courage.
