'Coast of Bohemia' Summary
Cornelia Saunders, a young woman from a comfortably affluent family, finds her life lacking in fulfillment. She feels an unexpressed longing for something more, something beyond the social expectations and shallow pleasures of her world. Drawn to the allure of art and poetry, Cornelia ventures into the bohemian world, a space where unconventional individuals express themselves freely. She seeks to discover if she possesses a true artistic 'Gift' and whether embracing a bohemian life would bring her the meaning she desires. However, her journey into this new world is fraught with challenges. Cornelia faces the disapproving gaze of her family and society, as well as the complexities of navigating relationships and personal desires in an environment that is both alluring and unsettling. The novel explores the tension between convention and nonconformity, societal expectations and individual aspirations. Howells deftly portrays the allure and pitfalls of bohemia, as well as the struggles of a young woman seeking to find her place in the world.
