'Egoist' Summary
The Egoist is a tragi-comic novel by George Meredith that tells the story of Sir Willoughby Patterne, a wealthy and self-absorbed baronet who believes himself to be the center of the universe. When his first attempt at marriage is thwarted, he becomes obsessed with winning the hand of Clara Middleton, a strong-willed and independent woman who sees through his vanity. As Willoughby's pursuit of Clara becomes increasingly desperate, he begins to unravel, revealing the true extent of his egotism and cruelty. Meredith's novel is a sharp critique of Victorian society and a witty examination of the human condition.Book Details
