La novela comienza con la presentación de la familia Santa Cruz, una familia acomodada de la alta sociedad madrileña. Juanito Santa Cruz, el hijo de la familia, es un joven apuesto y encantador, pero también bastante superficial y egoísta. Se enamora de Jacinta, una joven de buena familia, y se casan. Sin embargo, Juanito tiene un pasado amoroso complicado, y su matrimonio con Jacinta no está libre de dificultades. En la trama se introduce Fortunata, una mujer de clase baja, que se convierte en la amante de Juanito.
