George Dandin: or The Abashed Husband
by Moliere
'George Dandin: or The Abashed Husband' Summary
George Dandin is a wealthy farmer who, blinded by love, marries Angelique, the daughter of a foolish and arrogant country gentleman, Monsieur de Sotenville. Angelique, however, is not truly in love with George, and her heart belongs to the charming Clitandre. Throughout the play, Angelique and her family manipulate George and exploit his love for her. They play pranks on him, make him the butt of their jokes, and shamelessly use his wealth for their own amusement. George, oblivious to his wife's true intentions and her family's machinations, is left constantly humiliated and bewildered. The play culminates in a series of escalating misunderstandings and farcical situations that expose the absurdity of social class and the dangers of marrying for status rather than love. 'George Dandin' offers a satirical commentary on the hypocrisy and shallowness of the French aristocracy, highlighting the power dynamics within families and the consequences of social inequality. Molière's witty dialogue and outrageous situations make the play a hilarious exploration of human folly and the complexities of love, marriage, and social status.Book Details
