'Harbor' Summary
The novel opens with young Billy, living with his family on the Brooklyn waterfront, surrounded by the sights and sounds of the harbor. His father, a hardworking man, is deeply entrenched in the shipping industry, a world Billy comes to resent. He yearns for escape, for a life dedicated to writing. With his mother's support, he sets off for Paris, a city that offers a different kind of life. After spending years in Paris, Billy returns to the harbor, a changed man, and finds himself drawn back to the world he once sought to leave behind. As Billy matures, he becomes deeply involved in the labor movement, particularly during a major strike, which further deepens his understanding of the complexities of life on the waterfront.
