Harbor
by Ernest Poole
'Harbor' Summary
The novel opens with young Billy, living with his family on the Brooklyn waterfront, surrounded by the sights and sounds of the harbor. His father, a hardworking man, is deeply entrenched in the shipping industry, a world Billy comes to resent. He yearns for escape, for a life dedicated to writing. With his mother's support, he sets off for Paris, a city that offers a different kind of life. In Paris, he encounters Joe Kramer, a figure who challenges Billy's perspective on the world, forcing him to confront complexities he would rather avoid. After spending years in Paris, Billy returns to the harbor, a changed man, and finds himself drawn back to the world he once sought to leave behind. He finds inspiration in the harbor and the people who call it home, and the social and economic changes that are reshaping the landscape. As Billy matures, he becomes deeply involved in the labor movement, particularly during a major strike, which further deepens his understanding of the complexities of life on the waterfront. The harbor becomes a source of his writing, as he seeks to understand the lives of those around him, capturing the beauty and struggles of a world he once dismissed.Book Details
