The story begins in the summer of 1914, as the carefree days of Edwardian England give way to the ominous rumblings of war. Lord Coombe, a pillar of the old order, finds himself struggling to reconcile his traditional values with the rapidly changing world around him. His daughter Feather, a spirited and independent young woman, is torn between her desire for adventure and her responsibilities to her family. And Robin, a sensitive and artistic young man, grapples with his own inner demons as he faces the prospect of war. As the war rages on, the lives of Lord Coombe, Feather, and Robin are irrevocably altered. Lord Coombe's world is shattered as he witnesses the horrors of the trenches firsthand. Feather defies convention by becoming a nurse on the front lines, where she experiences both the horrors and the profound humanity of war. And Robin, haunted by the trauma of his experiences, struggles to find meaning and purpose in a world that has been forever changed.
