Heautontimorumenos; the Self-Tormentor

by Terence

Heautontimorumenos, or The Self-Tormentor, is a play by the Roman playwright Terence, adapted from the Greek playwright Menander. The play centers around Menedemus, an old man who is deeply distressed by his son Clinia's absence, driven away by Menedemus's harshness. Menedemus's friend, Chremes, attempts to reconcile the father and son, introducing a series of misunderstandings and comedic situations involving love, social conventions, and the complexities of familial relationships. The play explores themes of parental control, the consequences of harsh discipline, the power of forgiveness, and the inevitability of human folly.
