O romance 'Helena' de Machado de Assis conta a história de Helena, uma jovem filha ilegítima de um influente conselheiro do Império Brasileiro. O conselheiro falece e, em seu testamento, determina que Helena seja integrada à sua família, formada por seu filho Estácio e sua parente Dona Úrsula. A chegada de Helena causa grande agitação na família, principalmente por conta do seu passado e do papel da sociedade. A história gira em torno das tensões e conflitos familiares, da busca pela aceitação e pela identidade, e das complexas relações sociais que envolvem amor, segredo, classe social e moral.
