'Nether World' Summary
Set in 19th century London, the novel follows Michael, a man who returns from Australia a wealthy man but conceals this from those around him. Michael's belief in the corrupting influence of money leads him to live a frugal life and contemplate leaving his fortune to his granddaughter Jane on the condition that she uses it for charitable causes. Jane, however, grapples with the decision, torn between her own aspirations and the moral imperative to help others. The novel explores themes of wealth and poverty, the ethics of inheritance, and the struggle to reconcile personal desires with social responsibility.Book Details
