'野分 (Nowaki)' Summary
The novel begins with the introduction of three main characters: Shiraishi Dōya, Takayanagi Shūsaku, and Nakano Teruichi. Shiraishi is a struggling writer who has dropped out of several schools and is determined to make a name for himself in the literary world. Takayanagi is a poor university graduate who is struggling to find his place in the world. Nakano is a wealthy university graduate who is bored with his life and is looking for something more meaningful. The three characters meet when Shiraishi interviews Nakano for an article. Shiraishi is immediately drawn to Takayanagi's intelligence and passion, and the two men quickly become friends. Nakano is initially skeptical of Shiraishi, but he eventually comes to admire his determination and talent. As the novel progresses, the three friends navigate the complexities of the literary world and grapple with their own personal demons. Shiraishi struggles with poverty and self-doubt, Takayanagi struggles with his health and his feelings for Shiraishi, and Nakano struggles with boredom and a lack of purpose. Despite their challenges, the three friends support each other and help each other to grow as writers.
