«Раковина» является центральным сборником стихов Георгия Шенгели, демонстрирующим его высокое мастерство и эрудицию. В середине 1930-х годов он практически прекратил писать оригинальные стихи, сосредоточившись на переводах и теории поэтики. В период с 1933 по 1941 год работал редактором в Гослитиздате, предоставляя возможность публиковаться поэтам, лишенным других средств к существованию. Сборник включает в себя разнообразные лирические произведения, отражающие переживания и наблюдения автора, а также его глубокие знания о поэтической традиции.
