Resurrection, Book 2
by Leo Tolstoy
'Resurrection, Book 2' Summary
Resurrection tells the story of Prince Dmitry Nekhlyudov, a young nobleman who lives a life of privilege and hedonism. He is summoned for jury duty and unexpectedly encounters a woman named Katya Maslova, a former maid he once had a brief relationship with. Katya has been imprisoned for a crime she did not commit, and Nekhlyudov is forced to confront the consequences of his past actions. He learns that Katya was fired after his affair and later ended up in prostitution. The novel follows Nekhlyudov as he embarks on a journey of spiritual awakening and attempts to help Katya find redemption. His efforts to change her fate become entangled with his own internal struggle with his beliefs, the injustice of the legal system, and the hypocrisy of the church. As he navigates a web of social inequality, bureaucratic hurdles, and moral dilemmas, Nekhlyudov grapples with questions of guilt, responsibility, and the nature of forgiveness. He ultimately questions the entire system of justice and the role of religion in society, revealing the profound social and spiritual corruption that permeates the lives of even the most privileged.Book Details
