'Secret Battle' Summary
Harry Penrose, a young British officer, embarks on his military career with idealistic aspirations. However, his romanticized notions of heroism are shattered by the grim reality of war. During the Gallipoli campaign, Penrose witnesses firsthand the brutality and chaos of combat, experiencing the psychological and physical hardships that define the conflict. The story follows his journey as he grapples with the effects of war trauma, leading to a decline in his mental state. His initial self-assuredness gives way to crippling fear and self-doubt as he endures the horrors of the Somme.
