Der junge Maler Ambrosius unternimmt 1836 eine Wanderung im Salzkammergut. Dort sind in letzter Zeit einige tragische Unfälle geschehen, die man der Unvorsichtigkeit der Reisenden zuschreibt. Ambrosius wird von schlechtem Wetter überrascht und findet Unterschlupf bei der Familie eines Försters, wo er einige Tage bleibt. Weitere Unfälle geschehen und Ambrosius gerät unter Mordverdacht.
