Acharnians (Billson Translation)
by Aristophanes
'Acharnians (Billson Translation)' Summary
Dicæopolis, fed up with the endless war between Athens and Sparta, decides to take matters into his own hands. He journeys to Sparta, negotiates a peace treaty, and returns to Athens a hero. However, his peace-loving ways cause a stir amongst the war-mongering Athenians. They resent his success and the peace he brings. Dicæopolis's efforts to convince them of the benefits of peace are met with skepticism and resistance. Through humorous and often absurd situations, Aristophanes criticizes the political landscape and the follies of war, highlighting the human cost and the irrationality of conflict. He mocks the political leaders, the public's susceptibility to propaganda, and the absurdity of warfare. Ultimately, 'The Acharnians' is a celebration of peace, a plea for common sense, and a reminder of the futility of war.Book Details
