**The Anabasis** by Xenophon is a first-hand account of the march of 10,000 Greek mercenaries who were hired by the Persian prince Cyrus the Younger to help him overthrow his brother, King Artaxerxes II. The march took place in 401 BC and covered a distance of over 1,500 miles. After Cyrus was killed in battle, the Greek mercenaries were stranded in hostile territory and had to fight their way back to Greece.
