Cid

by Pierre Corneille

The Cid, a classic French play by Pierre Corneille, is a tragic love story set in 11th-century Spain. The play tells the story of Don Rodrigue, a young nobleman who is forced to choose between his love for Chimène and his duty to avenge his father's honor. When Chimène's father, Don Gomès, insults Don Diègue, Rodrigue's father, Rodrigue challenges Gomès to a duel and kills him. This sets off a chain of events that leads to Rodrigue's exile and Chimène's vow to avenge her father's death. The Cid is a powerful and moving play that explores the themes of love, honor, duty, and revenge.
