Deel 1 van De Ellendigen, genaamd Fantine, introduceert ons aan de tragische figuur van Fantine, een jonge vrouw die door haar moeilijke omstandigheden genoodzaakt is om haar dochter Cosette te verlaten. Het verhaal schetst een leven van armoede en uitbuiting, waarin Fantine steeds meer wordt gedwongen om haar waardigheid op te geven om voor haar kind te zorgen.
