Driven from her Gypsy tribe by sexual harassment, young Hagar Stanley seeks refuge with her miserly uncle Jacob, a London pawnbroker. After teaching her the business, he dies, and Hagar takes over, running the pawnshop while awaiting the arrival of the legitimate heir. Among the various items that pass across her counter, Hagar discovers a series of mysteries. Some are linked to crimes, while others involve human deceit and betrayal. Hagar investigates these, using her Gypsy shrewdness in combination with a woman's intuition to uncover the truth.
