'Notre Dame' Summary
Im mittelalterlichen Paris, während des Festes der Narren, verliebt sich Quasimodo, der missgestaltete Glöckner der Kathedrale Notre-Dame, in die schöne Zigeunerin Esmeralda. Doch seine Liebe bleibt unerwidert, denn Esmeralda verliebt sich in den edlen Soldaten Phoebus. Der eifersüchtige Erzdiakon Claude Frollo, der ebenfalls in Esmeralda verliebt ist, versucht, sie zu entführen und schließlich sogar zu töten. Quasimodo rettet Esmeralda, wird aber selbst für ihre angebliche Entführung verhaftet. Während des Prozesses wird er zum Tod verurteilt, aber schließlich von Esmeralda gerettet. Doch die tragische Liebe und die Verzweiflung führen schließlich zum Tod Esmeraldas. Quasimodo, der von Trauer und Wut erfüllt ist, rettet den sterbenden Frollo, bevor er selbst an seinen Verletzungen stirbt. Der Roman endet mit der Beerdigung der beiden Liebenden. Der Glöckner von Notre-Dame ist eine Geschichte über Liebe, Schönheit, soziale Ungleichheit, und die Grausamkeit des Schicksals.
