Shoemaker's Holiday
'Shoemaker's Holiday' Summary
Rowland Lacy, a young nobleman, falls in love with Rose Oateley, a middle-class girl. However, their families forbid the match due to their class difference and Lacy's extravagant lifestyle. Forced to join the army in France, Lacy devises a plan to avoid service by disguising himself as a Dutch shoemaker named Hans. He becomes an apprentice to Simon Eyre, a boisterous and successful shoemaker, and unexpectedly thrives in his new role. Meanwhile, Eyre's apprentice, Ralph, is called to fight in France. When he returns, he finds that his wife, Jane, has been tempted by a wealthy suitor, Hammon. The play follows the interwoven paths of these characters, exploring themes of class, love, and ambition. Lacy's disguise leads to a series of comical situations, while Eyre's rise to power is a testament to his entrepreneurial spirit and good fortune. In the end, love triumphs, social barriers are overcome, and justice is served, leaving the audience with a sense of hope and laughter.Book Details
