Spieler
'Spieler' Summary
Alexei Ivanovich, a young tutor, accompanies a retired Russian general and his family to a spa town. Despite their meager financial situation, they are drawn to the world of gambling, particularly Alexei who becomes hopelessly addicted. He falls in love with Polina, the general's stepdaughter, who is also involved in a complicated relationship with a wealthy and manipulative gambler. As Alexei's obsession grows, he plunges deeper into debt, risking everything he has, including his relationship with Polina. He becomes consumed by the thrill of the game and the promise of quick riches, sacrificing his principles and moral compass in the pursuit of fortune. The novel explores the psychological and social intricacies of addiction, as Alexei grapples with the consequences of his actions. He faces moral dilemmas, confronts his own weakness, and witnesses the decay of those around him as they succumb to the allure of easy money. Dostoevsky's portrayal of the characters' descent into ruin, their flawed relationships, and their struggles against their own desires, creates a poignant exploration of the human condition and the dangers of unchecked passion.Book Details
