The story begins with two young men, Captain Delaware and the mysterious Mr. Burrell, sharing a carriage from London to Staines. Captain Delaware is a war hero, recently returned from an enforced sojourn in Sicily. Mr. Burrell is a man of wealth and influence, but his motives are unclear. As the two men travel, they gradually reveal their true natures and the secrets that have shaped their lives.
