Thyestes
'Thyestes' Summary
The play opens with Thyestes, haunted by the ghost of his father, Tantalus, who prophesies the destruction of his family. Thyestes is then confronted by his brother Atreus, consumed by a thirst for revenge for Thyestes' past betrayal. Atreus, cunning and ruthless, devises a horrific plan to destroy Thyestes. He lures Thyestes to a feast, offering him a dish containing the flesh of his own sons. The play culminates in a scene of horrifying recognition, as Thyestes realizes the truth of his tragic situation. He is overwhelmed by the realization of his own guilt and the destructive power of his actions. The play ends with a chorus lamenting the cycle of violence and the consequences of unchecked ambition, leaving the audience to ponder the dark depths of human nature and the inevitable consequences of revenge.Book Details
