Titan

Titan

by Theodore Dreiser

Titan is the second book in Theodore Dreiser's Trilogy of Desire. It follows the story of Frank Cowperwood, a ruthless and ambitious businessman who moves to Chicago with his new wife Aileen. Cowperwood sets his sights on taking over the city's street-railway system, and he uses his political connections and unscrupulous tactics to bankrupt his opponents. As Cowperwood's power grows, he becomes increasingly isolated from society. His past scandals are exposed, and he is shunned by the city's elite. Even his own wife turns against him, having an affair with a wealthy and influential man. Meanwhile, Cowperwood becomes involved with a young woman named Berenice Fleming. Berenice is drawn to Cowperwood's power and ambition, but she is also aware of his dark side. As the novel progresses, Cowperwood's empire begins to crumble. He is unable to obtain the fifty-year franchise for his railway schemes that he so desperately wants. In the end, Cowperwood is left alone and defeated, but he remains unbowed. He is a man who will never give up on his dreams, no matter the cost.
