Lucien de Rubempré, jeune homme ambitieux et naïf, quitte sa province natale pour Paris, espérant conquérir le monde littéraire et la société. Mais sa quête de gloire et de fortune le conduit à une série de déceptions et d'erreurs. Il se lie d'amitié avec le brillant mais cynique David Séchard, qui l'initie aux ruses du monde parisien. Lucien tombe amoureux de la belle et capricieuse Coralie, une actrice de théâtre, mais sa liaison les entraîne dans des situations dangereuses. L'ambition de Lucien le pousse à se rapprocher de la riche et influente Madame de Bargeton, mais son affection pour elle se révèle être une illusion. Au cœur de la société parisienne, il se retrouve piégé dans un réseau de mensonges et d'intrigues, où la réussite sociale se paie au prix de son intégrité.
