'Eye of Dread' Summary

The Civil War rages on, and the young men of Leauvite have been sent away to fight. Among them are Peter Junior and Richard Kildene. Betty Ballard is just a child when they leave, but by the time the war ends, she has become a young woman. Peter Junior, wounded in the war, finds himself at Betty's father's studio, learning to become an artist. He falls in love with Betty and proposes to her, planning to take her to France with him.
