Le roman suit les aventures de Joseph Rouletabille, un jeune journaliste brillant qui se retrouve confronté à un crime énigmatique. Mademoiselle Stangerson, la fiancée d'un riche collectionneur d'art, est retrouvée assassinée dans sa chambre, la porte étant verrouillée de l'intérieur. Rouletabille, aidé par le commissaire Maigret, doit démêler les fils d'un mystère complexe et déjouer les tentatives d'un mystérieux tueur.
