Tartuffe

Tartuffe

by Moliere

Tartuffe, a play written by Molière in 1664, follows the story of a pious fraud who ingratiates himself into a household and wreaks havoc. Tartuffe, the titular character, is a religious hypocrite who uses his feigned piety to manipulate and deceive others. He insinuates himself into the household of Orgon, a wealthy bourgeois, and quickly gains his trust and confidence. Tartuffe's influence over Orgon grows to the point where he is able to control the household and even arranges to marry Orgon's daughter, Mariane. However, Tartuffe's true nature is eventually revealed, and he is exposed as a fraud and an imposter. The play is a sharp satire on religious hypocrisy and the dangers of blind faith.
